As planned, the Sunrise Wind Farm, an offshore wind energy generation facility to be located in federal waters approximately 30 miles off the east coast of Long Island, will generate enough clean energy to power 600,000 New York homes. The mammoth task of delivering that power into the State’s electrical grid is one step closer with the approval of a key certificate for the Sunrise Wind New York Cable Project (the Project)—a 25-mile offshore/onshore transmission line.
The New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) issued Sunrise Wind LLC (Sunrise Wind) a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) for the Project, which connects the Sunrise Wind Farm to an existing substation in Brookhaven, Suffolk County. Harris Beach, led by Partners John McManus and Aubrey Ohanian of our Energy Industry Team, provided regulatory and project management counsel to the Sunrise Wind joint venture between Ørsted and Eversource Energy.
According to the Governor’s office, the Project represents the largest offshore wind farm to connect to New York’s electric grid. The NYSPSC order explains that the Project can be built while minimizing community and environmental impacts and helping New York State achieve its vision for a 100% clean energy future. We thank the NYSPSC and its staff for its diligent review of the Project, which included extensive analyses and contributions by experts across multiple State agencies as well as input from the Long Island community.
