Harris Beach attorney and Health Care Industry Team leader Roy Breitenbach was one of three lawyers featured in a recent Long Island Business News (LIBN) article discussing the “No Surprises Act” – a law passed by Congress to protect patients from surprise medical bills which has led to legal disputes between providers and insurers.
In the article, Roy calls attention to an overwhelmed Independent Dispute Resolution (IDR) system – a process put in place to mediate payment issues between providers and insurance companies that often allows insurance companies to avoid paying huge sums of money to health care providers even when the IDR process found they are owed payment.
“At the end of the day, there’s a lot of out-of-network providers waiting a very long time to get reimbursed, and they’re owed millions of dollars,” Roy said.
