As anticipated, President Donald Trump this week issued a new Executive Order that will restrict visas for foreign workers, at least through the end of the year, as the economy recovers from the global pandemic. Danielle Rizzo, co-leader of our Immigration Law Practice Group, believes the order may have a loophole that would impact the immigration status for our neighbors to the north. She talked with Alex Panetta, Washington correspondent for the Canadian Broadcasting Co., about the new order and what it might require of Canadians. Her conclusion: because of the special immigration relationship between the U.S. and Canada, the new order might not apply to Canadian citizens – “but it’s not extremely straightforward.” The Immigration Law Practice Group published a legal alert about the order earlier in the week.
